Former India captain MS Dhoni was retained for Rs 4 crore as an ‘uncapped’ player by Chennai Super Kings ahead of the IPL 2026 season. Former India and Chennai Super Kings all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin believes a couple of former international captains are in race to become the next head coach in the Chennai franchise. In what will be good news for CSK fans, Dhoni may also consider taking up a mentor-cum-head-coach role with CSK in the IPL 2027 season, according to Ashwin.

The ex-India off-spinner believes Dhoni can be a ‘stop-gap’ arrangement before former England captain Eoin Morgan can be considered for the role ahead of IPL 2028 mega auction.

“I have a strong hunch that under Dhoni’s leadership, like the shoots of a banyan tree, the others will work together… Personally, that route is the correct one. I still think so. Because the appointment will be a touch late. Because the mega auction is only one year away. … My strongest hunch is that under MS Dhoni’s leadership, like the shoots of a banyan tree, the others will work together. That’s my strongest hunch for at least the next one year,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan has already made it clear to Cricbuzz website that the decision over the next head coach of the team will be taken by whole-time director Rupa Gurunath in consultation with both MS Dhoni and current skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad.

Ashwin added that former Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain Eoin Morgan is in line to join CSK as head coach. While Morgan led England team to the 2019 ODI World Cup title, he is yet to take up the role as head coach of any major team.

“I have a feeling Eoin Morgan might be coming… His name is doing the rounds strongly…; early discussions are on, no doubt. In this, two scenarios: Eoin Morgan- will he take it this year? Or someone else builds the team in a mini auction, and he takes it later?” Ashwin said.

Ashwin also added how former England head coach Brendon McCullum is another name being discussed for the job. But it might not be possible because of his prior commitments with the England ODI and T20I teams. Ashwin said that while the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) seems open to allowing their head coach to work in the IPL, it won’t be straightforward with the ODI World Cup 2027 is now just over a year away.

Life has changed dramatically for Sharmila Dhankar, who won India a Gold medal in the Para Shot Put event at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow; the country’s first medal in that event in 20 years.

From television interviews to a meeting with the Prime Minister, from a shoot for Kaun Banega Crorepati to strangers recognising her on the streets, her world has changed in ways she never imagined.

In this exclusive conversation with Sudisha Sinha, Sharmila Dhankar spoke about meeting the Indian PM, her late start in the sport, the emotional weight of winning, and the message she has for women still hesitating to take the first step.

Sudisha Sinha: First of all, congratulations, you have made India proud. You met Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently, and yesterday, you had a shoot for KBC. So, how was your experience?

Sharmila Dhankar: It was an honor to meet Modi ji. He is the first Prime Minister who respects para-athletes and always talks to us. It was a wonderful experience shooting for KBC as well and talking to Amitabh Bachchan ji. He is a very nice person and spoke very warmly about life.

Sudisha Sinha: We have seen a lot of videos in which you said that you will get your daughters to win medals. Please tell us about that.

Sharmila Dhankar: As I work hard, parents are inspired to encourage their children to win medals as well. So, when my daughters become 20-21 years old, I will take them to the ground. Yes, they are already working hard.

Sudisha Sinha: There is a myth in our country that you cannot start or practice sports after a certain age. You started your shot put journey at the age of 34. What would you like to say to our viewers about your experience?

Sharmila Dhankar: After my second marriage, my husband told me about the game, and I took it to the ground. I worked hard and got good results. Everyone is happy.

Sudisha Sinha: It takes a lot of hard work and sacrifice to win a medal. When you won the medal, how did you feel? How would you describe that feeling?

Sharmila Dhankar: When our competition was going on, I knew that I would win. I worked hard for 6 years. After winning, I was happy that my country was getting famous. But for 2-3 days, I had not realised that I had won the medal; it took time to sink in. I was 4th in the Asian and Commonwealth Games earlier, so later, I realised that I had finally won the medal.

Sudisha Sinha: In the past, you had come so close to winning a medal. How did you handle that heartbreak back then, and how did you keep going?

Sharmila Dhankar: I was 4th in the Commonwealth Games. It was a good thing that I reached the Commonwealth Games after 2 years of hard work. I was sad that I was 4th. I was upset that I was 4th in the Asian and Commonwealth Games. But my mother and husband supported me. They told me to move forward. I worked hard.

Sudisha Sinha: What changes have you seen in your life after winning the medal?

Sharmila Dhankar: After winning the medal, everything changed. I couldn’t believe it. I was thinking about it for 2-3 days. Then I got an interview. I got a call from KBC. I met Mr. Modi. I was very happy. I thought I had won the medal for my country. I keep the medal with me. I will keep the medal with me until I win the second medal. This will motivate me.

Sudisha Sinha: Now that you have won at the Commonwealth Games, what is your next goal?

Sharmila Dhankar: I will prepare for the Asian Para Games in Japan. I am resting now. I will play in the World Championship in 2027. My real target is the Paralympics.

Sudisha Sinha: What message would you like to give to the women in the country who are hesitating?

Sharmila Dhankar: Women should move forward. If I were hesitating, I wouldn’t be here today. I have faced every situation. I have moved forward. If I were scared, I would have stayed there. I have never been afraid of any situation. I have fought bravely. Women should fight bravely. There are problems. Life is good. Don’t be afraid. Stay strong.

After the interview, during our conversation, Sharmila also mentioned how her life suddenly changed after winning the medal and making India proud, and how this would not affect her practice for the Asian Para Games and the Paralympics.

But somewhere along the way, she has come to see it not as a burden. The same society that once questioned her choices now stops to say she has inspired them, and that shift, from doubt to respect, is one she carries with quiet pride.
