In a statement issued, Liverpool FC said, “Liverpool have agreed a deal to sign defender Ronald Araujo on loan from FC Barcelona for the 2026-27 season, subject to a successful work permit application and international clearance. The experienced Uruguay international will join the Reds having made more than 200 appearances for the La Liga side."

Araujo has contributed to three Spanish top-flight triumphs since joining Barcelona in 2018 – including in the most recent season – and was appointed club captain earlier this year.

With a temporary move to Anfield, he has boosted manager Andoni Iraola’s defensive attack ahead of the new campaign, finishing fifth last season with 60 points and missing out on the UEFA Champions League slot.

“I cannot wait to get started. I am very, very happy," 27-year-old Araujo, who will wear No.33, told Liverpoolfc.com.

“I am excited to be here at this massive club with lots of history. I am excited to meet my teammates, excited to get started playing, and I am very motivated and really up for getting going."

“I think it was the ideal move for me at this stage in my career. I think it was a move that was necessary for me to take. As soon as I heard that interest from Liverpool, everything went into action really, really quickly."

Araujo is a centre-back also capable of playing at the right-back position and started his professional career with Rentistas in his home nation.

After a single season with Uruguayan outfit Boston River, he then made the move to Europe in a transfer to Barcelona, where he initially participated in the club’s B team.

Araujo debuted at senior level for Barca in 2019 and broke into the set-up permanently from the 2020-21 campaign onwards.

To date, he has tallied 213 appearances and 14 goals for Barcelona, lifting the Copa del Rey twice and the Spanish Super Cup three times, alongside those three La Liga successes.

Araujo has also secured 27 international caps for Uruguay, scoring once. (ANI)

Indian star Jemimah Rodrigues stated that the team's victory in the 2025 ICC Women's World Cup has fuelled their ambition as they look forward to the inaugural ICC Women's Champions Trophy in 2027. So, I think our team is working towards that, and yes, the Champions Trophy is going to be very special. It's happening for the first time ever in women's cricket, and I'll be a part of it for the first time as well, so it'll be pretty special, and I'm really looking forward to it. I think mindset-wise, nothing changes. At the end of the day, it's about the team and how to make the team win, and that always stays," she said.

Jemimah previews the South Africa tour

Before turning their attention to the Champions Trophy, India will embark on a seven-match multi-format tour of South Africa in December. The schedule features a single Test in Gqeberha starting December 9, followed by a three-match ODI series from December 16, and three T20Is beginning December 26.

Rodrigues believes the upcoming series will be a test for the team, highlighting the competitive history between the two sides.

"It's going to be a really exciting series for sure. Both teams have been doing really well. We've had a lot of rivalry lately and played a lot of matches against South Africa. I think it's going to be great, with two of the top teams in the world facing each other in South Africa. It's going to be a great challenge, and we're really looking forward to it," she concluded.

Rodrigues recently returned from the UK, where a hamstring injury ended her run with the Southern Brave in The Hundred 2026.

Imphal (Manipur) [India], August 10 (ANI): India’s Commonwealth Games 2026 medal-winning weightlifters, Chanambam Rishikanta Singh and Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam, both from Imphal, received a warm and grand welcome at Imphal Airport on Monday. Both athletes expressed their determination to perform strongly in their upcoming competitions.

While Rishikanta won the silver medal in the men’s 60kg event at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Bindyarani Devi won the bronze medal in the women’s 58kg event.

Speaking to reporters at the Imphal Airport, Rishikanta credited his parents, elder brother, family, friends, coaches, support staff, the National Sports Academy, the Sports Authority of India and the Indian Weightlifting Federation for supporting his journey despite coming from a financially disadvantaged background. He said he had aimed for gold but settled for silver after struggling with knee pain, adding that he was happy with the result. He also said his future focus is on preparing for the Olympics and Asian Games.

“First of all, I give credit to my mom and dad. After that, my elder brother and my family members and my nearby friends circle. Also, the National Sports Academy, the Sports Authority of India and the Weightlifting Federation of India. I want to give credit to all of them because I come from a very poor family. We are not rich. I don’t know; credit should be given to everyone who supported me- the staff, coaches, all of them. The plan for the future is to prepare for the Olympics and Asian Games," he said.

“I hoped for a gold medal. But I won the silver medal. I hoped for a gold medal with a lot of preparation for training before. But unfortunately, my knee pained. But I won the silver medal; I’m so happy," he added.

BJP MLA Sapam Ranjan Singh congratulated Rishikanta and his family, praising his achievement as a proud moment for the country. He also acknowledged the support of those who helped Rishikanta win the medal and highlighted Manipur’s strong sporting tradition.

“It’s a very proud moment for our country. He (Chanambam Rishikanta Singh) is from my constituency. It’s hearty congratulations to him and also to his family and also to all the people who have supported him in making sure that he wins a medal. He brought laurels to our country. Manipur has always excelled in sports," he said.

On the other hand, Bindyarani Devi also expressed happiness after winning a bronze medal at her second Commonwealth Games. She said she is looking forward to the upcoming events and hopes to perform well in them.

“I feel happy; this is my second time participating in the Commonwealth Games, and I won a bronze medal. I am truly delighted. There are many upcoming events, and I hope to perform well in them," she said.

Notably, the 2026 Games were hosted under a compact format, leading to the removal of major Indian medal-earning events like shooting, wrestling, and badminton.

New Delhi [India], August 10 (ANI): Former India opener and Punjab Kings batting coach Wasim Jaffer believes KL Rahul is better suited without the added responsibility of captaincy, saying the star batter performs at his best when he can concentrate solely on his batting.

Speaking on The Great Indian Cricket Show on Doordarshan, former Punjab Kings batting coach Wasim Jaffer shared his insights regarding KL Rahul’s career and leadership roles.

Reflecting on Rahul’s batting consistency versus his temperament for captaincy, Jaffer suggested that freeing the batter from leadership duties allows his natural game to flourish.

“KL Rahul’s personality is better off not captaining because if you leave him to play, I think he’ll always give you 500-600 runs. He’s a bankable player. He will win 2-3 games on his own, which he does in every season," he said on The Great Indian Cricket Show on Doordarshan.

Jaffer said that captaincy adds extra pressure for KL Rahul, given his personality.

“So I just feel that with the kind of personality he has, captaincy just puts a bit of added pressure on him," he said.

With India set to face Sri Lanka in an upcoming two-match Test series in Galle and Colombo, Rahul’s role purely as a core senior batter remains pivotal to the team’s balance.
