Gehrig's Historic Streak Ends at 2,130

New York Yankees' Lou Gehrig ended his legendary 2,130 consecutive games streak on May 2, 1939, voluntarily removing himself from the lineup as his health began to decline.

The "Iron Horse" voluntarily sat out a game against the Detroit Tigers, ending a streak that had lasted nearly 14 years. Though not diagnosed at the time, Gehrig would later be diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), the disease that would eventually take his life in 1941.

During an emotional tribute at Yankee Stadium on July 4, 1939, Gehrig delivered his famous speech declaring himself "the luckiest man on the face of this earth" despite his circumstances. The Baseball Writers' Association elected Gehrig to the Hall of Fame in 1939, and his record stood until Cal Ripken Jr. broke it in 1995. sos-zagle.org.pl
