Manfred: Salary Cap Could Cause MLB Strike

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred warns that the owners' salary cap proposal could trigger a work stoppage like the one that canceled the 1994 World Series.

Manfred expressed concern that the owners' first cap proposal since 1994 could lead to a repeat of the 7 1/2-month strike that caused the cancellation of the World Series for the first time in 90 years. He was a junior lawyer on the owners' bargaining team during those negotiations.

The commissioner stated that management believes the luxury tax system in place since 2003 no longer works, with tax payments increasing from $78.5 million in 2022 to $402.6 million last year. Players have vowed to fight a cap as long as it takes, and the current CBA expires December 1, with management expected to impose a lockout. newsbetting.bond
